I just completed a 3 night stay at Mario de Fiori 37 in the suite on the top floor with sloped ceilings and beams. The hotel was perfectly located, really peaceful, very clean, and well appointed with linens, lighting, closets, separate tub, etc. I generally stay in larger hotels and initially wasn't sure about a hotel with such a tiny reception area and no restaurant. But, I loved it b/c the hotel is so peaceful and the staff is so helpful and the room so comfortable.

The location is a block from the Spanish Steps but on a small road - the minute you start walking down the Mario de Fiori you walk away from all the tourists and feel like you are in the middle of a Rome that hasn't changed that much for decades - except for the addition of high-end shopping. 
The staff was very helpful making suggestions and providing directions -- in particular Antiqua Enoteca, a restauraunt/bar right arond the corner where Gabriele took great care of us and the food was terrific. We never would have found this place without the MDF37 staff. And like others, I appreciated the welcome email and the thank you email.
I would definitely stay at this hotel on my next trip to Rome.
For those of you still trying to determine whether the Spanish Steps is the right neighborhood for your stay in Rome, I would definitely recommend this location for all tourist activiities. We walked everywhere and could get to the Colisseum, Forum, Vatican City etc. pretty quickly. And while we walked through many, many wonderful areas, I didn't see another that I would rather stay in. The area has a wonderful neighborhood feel and is VERY clean, as were almost every area we went in Rome
